Today Google released a message on its Adsense Weblog to explain the pound key.
Search the pound key
Google verifies telephone numbers by asking users to key in a 6-digit verification number. To complete this procedure, the pound key should be pressed. That seems to be problematic because only few people have a pound key (₤) on their telephone.
In its blogpost about the pound key Google explains that they actually mean the hash key (#). Probably that is a big relief for all the people looking for the pound key.
The big (usability) reward however is in their reaction to this issue. Google shows that is listens to its users and takes them seriously. No matter how stupid you think your business partners are, they are also helping you to build your business. Google apologies for the confusion and lets us know that they are further working to perfect their non-US English. Whatever that may be.
