Deleting functionality would solve a lot but also erodes the functionality of your website. The safest way could be not to permit comments. However, you would like people to interact with you. Where is the balance?

Captcha is very user unfriendly. Like you said mostly very hard to read for people. Nowday's i have to fill captchas even with google. Very irritating. Why not create a system that will automaticly block html codes in comments and delete the comment. Would be very effective i think. No links possible = no spam

Creating a great captha is often a hard job, but it can save you from deleting lots of spam comments/posts/users/...

If you're interested in some more (frustrating) captha's take a look at the <a href="http://www.johnmwillis.com/other/top-10-worst-captchas/" rel="nofollow">10 worst captcha's</a>.

I do agree that captchas are annoying! you wont even notice that it says Enter 9+4 here on some sites unless you get an error later!
