4 sources of Google backlinks
Google can provide you with quality backlinks. Although some of these backlinks are not passing pagerank they can help you getting indexed or even with regular quality traffic.
Below I summarize 4 places to get Google backlinks.
1) Google profiles
Google provides the opportunity to present yourself to other users with a separate Google profile page.
Next to providing personal information you can insert several links choosing your won anchor text en title. These are do follow links and as far as I can determine they are indexed by Google.
Although there is some doubt whether these links actually support your ranking they seem to help you getting indexed faster.
Secondly, if you use systems like Google connect, your profile will accessible from the websites you join. By updating your profile this provides another opportunity to drive visitors to your website.
2) Trackback to Google weblogs
There are several Google weblogs hosted by Blogspot.com. Several of these weblogs accept comments (nofollow) and some of them even accept trackbacks (do follow).
Even though it is uncertain whether these links count towards your ranking, I do note that people actually click on them. So if you write on a Google subject, make sure to include a trackback. People visiting the Google weblogs may click your trackback and may possibly be interested in what you have to say.

3) Use Google groups
Google Group has evolved into a large community of people discussing several subjects. Many people leave questions and several provide answers. If your websites equals a topic on Google groups it may be beneficial to join the discussion and answer some questions.
Links from Google Groups do not pass pagerank. The value of these backlinks comes with the people looking for answers and certain topics. By answering questions in a smart way you may be able to attract targeted visitors to your website.
4) Google Notebook
Google Notebook enables you to save small notes. By checking the "public" option your notes become available to everybody. By having your note being public and including a link to your site you can gain a nofollow backlink. Although these links seem to be excluded from the rankings, they may have their influence to rankings in other search engines.
Please note that you should not insert sensitive information into these notes. Many people include password information and check the note to be publicly available. A search within Google Notebook using the keyword "password" brings all kind of sensitive information to the top. Martijn Beijk already wrote a topic on this security risk.

Is there any real software out there that can count your valid backlinks google counts? I had my website 3 years before I understood anything about backlinks and would really like to know how many google is counting, yahoo counts many but I understand google will be much lower.

I have never heard of this software. The softpedia pages states that this software automatically produces google pages with backlinks. Automatic backlink creation is a tricky business and you should be carefull with it.
If your virus scanner gives an alert on the software I should be even more carefull.
If you don’t mind going to a bit of trouble to set up a Google webmaster tools account… you can show Google that you control a particular website by placing some code in your index page… and then you can get a Google backlinks report on that site.
It will give greater numbers than the non invasive tools you find online..and it bound to be more accurate.

That is a great addition. It seems like you can add events into your Google calender and make them public. According to the helpsection the events will not appear in the search index. This could mean that you should add a backlink and only get benefit for non google search engines.
